verte lunden

verte lunden is a small popup autoexhibition. the title "verte lunden" is arbitrary, and it was used as a prompt during the initial phase of visual development.

they exist as a series of digital autopaintings, where a series of filters were applied to generated images to establish a rudimentary artistic style.

if i was to rest anywhere, id be at peace in places like these.

this show was motivated by recent work with cyberpunk concepts & aesthetics, the theme of 'dead data', and entering a space to access it. environments designed for the preservation and translation of virtual identities, paired with historic / cultural spaces- standing stones, grassy fields, walled gardens and ancient woodlands. these places serve ambiguous purposes, but residing within them is inevitably a reverent experience.

this style of burial mound was created as a plot element in a work of cyberpunk fiction, where families would all be kept in one resting place. in this fantasy scenario, coffins act as a form of digital / cold storage, containing data of the deceased. the centre of the mound would be hollow, allowing visitors to descend into the crypt and access the most recently buried dead. coffins placed outward would be connected through their recent descendants, creating a strong self-authenticating data system. this concept is governed by brutish walls and wide paths, and grass is employed as a welcoming, geometric blanket, or a meditative expanse.

this imagery is offset with depictions of ancient woodland and magical-realist depictions of flowers, groves and standing stones. areas that contain dense systems of natural, self-authenticating data.

both sets of images evoke certain ideals.

this work anticipates a future where nature is a finite resource, and its definition becomes re-interpreted.

before utilising this concept in a narrative set in a distant future, i wanted to develop it in an earlier context, set in a familiar period of time. this is the resulting body of work, so i wanted to share this brief exhibition with you.
